"I will readily admit that my feelings for the first two Harry Potter scores have always been ambivalent at best. I like the main themes, but the rest of the album usually turned into musical white-noise for me. However, with this album, there is more thematic material, and it stands out clearer. A detriment to the sequencing of the album, though, is that much of the thematic material is placed up front, so the last half of the album is all over the map with action and dramatic cues."
Kevin McGann (Music from the Movies)

"The score for the third entry in the series is the darkest yet. Although there are moments of comedy and joy, the predominant atmosphere is moody and scary."
Christian Clemmensen (Filmtracks)

"Buy it... if you, like most film music collectors, marvel at the ingenuity that John Williams conjures for each scene and unique idea in his fantasy scores."
"Avoid it... if you are a strong believer in issues relating to continuity in franchises of scores, and consequently wished to hear significant performances of themes from the earlier films."

"In many ways, Prisoner of Azkaban is a more interesting score than its predecessors and bears up better to repeated listening. True, it is perhaps a touch disjointed, but that's largely a result of the wealth of new material that Williams brings, but it's pleasing that he's moving forward with the series rather than endlessly reprising Hedwig's Theme with a token new theme. With no more Lord of the Rings, likely to be the blockbuster score of the year. A dark and exciting delight."
James Southall (Movie Wave)

"HP3 is a wonderful score. It is probably a little more disjointed than its predecessors, but as director Cuaron notes in the album booklet, Williams has somehow managed to pull together all the different styles (traditional classical romanticism, ancient music and even avant garde jazz) very well - which is praise indeed, since Cuaron reportedly would have used a different composer had it been up to him. Frankly, it's impossible to imagine another composer coming up with a score quite this good for a summer blockbuster and Williams is still ahead of all of his peers at this type of thing. Roll on the next one!"
