"Santaolalla has done something few before him have - he has devised a soundtrack release that captures the movie's language and holds together, and in some ways works even better, on its own. Babel is one of the most refreshing and exciting scores/soundtracks of the year."
Christian Clemmensen (Filmtracks)

"Buy it... if you seek parts of the creative, cross-cultural collection of songs heard in the film, or if you specifically noticed and enjoyed its sparse, source-like underscore."
"Avoid it... if you're only interested in the score because of its hype, or if you found Gustavo Santaolalla's previous scores to be unsatisfyingly simplistic and underachieving."
Clark Douglas (Movie Music UK)

"The score is so agonizingly minimal that it makes his work on 'Brokeback Mountain' sound like 'Planet of the Apes'. Most of it is a single acoustic guitar playing one... note... at... a... time... very... slowly... with a minimal synth drone in the background. He allows the guitar to play at normal speed towards the end. One cue features a very, very, loud electronic drone. That's it, that's the score, and in this reviewer's opinion, it's only adds to the plodding, aimless feel of the film."
Chris Beaumont (Blogcritics)

"This is a good soundtrack, something that is as epic as the film from which it comes, yet remains accessible. With all of the world locations and the interlaced stories, the music could just as easily have been a collection of stock music reminiscent of a travelogue. This strives for something more."
Mike Beek (Music from the Movies)

"Santaolalla’s score is scattered amongst a variety of musical styles and songs, forming a musical journey that takes in the dusty, exoticism of North Africa, the diversity of the North Mexican borderlands and the obscure modernism of Tokyo. The experience is a musical assault on the senses, a real voyage of discovery for the listener as we encounter Norteña music from the Mexican border, courtesy of the groups Los Incomparables and Nortec Collective, Japanese pop/dance music from the likes of Takashi Fujii and abstract instrumentals by Susumu Yokota."
