"All in all, The Queen is a mesmerizing score. With Firewall, Desplat seemed to have run out of fresh ideas for Hollywood scores, but by returning to smaller, independent films like his early outstanding work in Birth and Girl with a Pearl Earring, he gives us an insider's view of modern royalty through forms associated with them for hundreds of years. I cannot recommend it enough."

"The Queen is not Desplat at his most thematically striking, but the melodies do ultimately reveal themselves and are presented with the composer's always fine and delicate orchestration. Naturally, the London Symphony Orchestra play with distinction, not that this is the kind of music to tax a great orchestra, but just adds that final veneer of quality on another splendid offering."

"The Queen is not perhaps one of Desplat's more striking compositions, but repeated listening is extremely rewarding, with the composer once again demonstrating that there is a place for highly-considered, carefully-orchestrated music in modern films."

"The Queen is certainly not as spectacular or attention-grabbing as his work on Hostage or Firewall, or as classically beautiful as The Luzhin Defence or Birth, but nevertheless there is something about Desplat’s work on The Queen which is somehow mesmerising and enchanting. The rhythmic quality of the score keeps the album moving at a flowing pace, the sparkling orchestrations are defiantly English but never clichéd, and his effortlessly light touch with the quieter sections of the orchestra more than demonstrates his mastery of the craft. Recommended, especially for followers of this talented Frenchman’s increasingly impressive career."

"This is not, admittedly, music that will move you to tears or overtly work over your emotions, but it is some of the most intelligent and hypnotic film music the year has seen so far. Those who associate Desplat for the more emotionally vulnerable Girl with a Pearl Earring or the dynamic Hostage may be left wanting, but anyone with a penchant for his more cerebral music will find much to savor."
