"Mansell's score appears simple, with a limited variety of instruments and what appear to be simple themes, but this score is in fact a very delicately layered piece that works almost as well as a classical work as it does a film score. One interesting result of this score is that it shows how well electronic elements can work with an orchestral score to enhance it rather than take away from it. I definitely think this score should be up for consideration come Oscar time."
Clark Douglas (Movie Music UK)

"There are so many things to work from musically here... one could accentuate the diverse settings and time periods, or perhaps underline the humanity in an amazing setting, or better yet, emphasize the rich spirituality of the story. Composer Clint Mansell (who won acclaim for his 'Requiem for a Dream' score) does none of the above, instead opting to write a somewhat clinical minimalist score. It's not bad music, exactly, in fact, it might make a nice listen on album, but in the film, it adds next to nothing."
Jonathan Broxton (Movie Music UK)

"I found The Fountain to be a desperately frustrating work. Cues like 'Xibalba', 'First Snow' and 'Death is the Road to Awe' are great, and had the rest of the album been of a similar standard I would have been inclined to give it a better rating. I can still see a small section of the film music community absolutely loving every second of it. As it is, though, and taking into account all the unpalatable harshness elsewhere on the album, I personally doubt whether I will be immersing myself in the waters of this fountain regularly."
Christian Clemmensen (Filmtracks)

"Buy it... only if you are a dedicated fan of impressionistic scores and/or appreciated this score's minimalistic, repetitive constructs in the film itself."
"Avoid it... if you expect your journey to spiritual enlightenment to include intellectual complexity, harmonic resonance, or satisfying resolution."
James Southall (Movie-Wave.net)

"There is a brutal sense of intensity here which is very well done, but at the same time, the score is constructed entirely from the barest slither of a motif which is endlessly varied and repeated in minimalist fashion, which makes it exceptionally hard to listen to. Mansell is clearly very talented, and is an exciting prospect, but The Fountain is so intense that it becomes a challenging album indeed."
